Significance

The Battle of Ibiraocaí was an engagement between forces of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves and a Liga de los Pueblos Libres detachment under José Antonio Berdún during the Portuguese Conquest of the Banda Oriental. The Luso-Brazilian victory extended Portuguese operational momentum in the campaign against José Gervasio Artigas's federation. With Berdún commanding approximately 700 troops for the Federal League, the engagement represented one of several confrontations in which Portuguese forces progressively reduced Artigas's ability to defend the Banda Oriental, a campaign that ultimately resulted in Portuguese consolidation of the region.
