Significance
The Battle of Santa Ana, fought in Rio Grande do Sul, formed part of the broader Luso-Brazilian campaign to displace Artigas and the Federal League from the Banda Oriental. Although a detachment of General Curado's forces initially gained the upper hand against the Federal League contingent, their advance collapsed when ammunition ran out, forcing a retreat. The pursuing Federal League forces inflicted heavy casualties—up to 100 dead—on the withdrawing Luso-Brazilians. The engagement demonstrated that logistical shortfalls could offset tactical success in the interior theater, and that Federal League forces retained the capacity to convert an opponent's withdrawal into a punishing pursuit even when facing a larger imperial military effort.
