Battle of Rastatt

Overview

The Battle of Rastatt saw part of a Republican French army under Jean Victor Marie Moreau clash with elements of the Habsburg army under Maximilian Anton Karl, Count Baillet de Latour which were defending the line of the Murg River. Leading a wing of Moreau's army, Louis Desaix attacked the Austrians and drove them back to the Alb River in the War of the First Coalition action. Rastatt is a city in the state of Baden-Württemberg in Germany, located 89 kilometers (55 mi) south of Mannheim and 94 kilometres (58 mi) west of Stuttgart.

Significance

The Battle of Rastatt was an engagement during the War of the First Coalition in which French Republican forces under Jean Moreau pressed against Habsburg defensive positions along the Murg River. The action resulted in the Austrians under Count Latour being driven back to the Alb River, surrendering ground in the Baden region. With French forces numbering approximately 20,500 against an Austrian force of around 6,000, the engagement demonstrated a significant disparity in strength. The outcome extended Moreau's operational reach into southwest Germany, maintaining pressure on Habsburg forces during France's broader campaigning in this theater of the Revolutionary Wars.
