Action of 8 September 1796

Significance

The action of 9 September 1796 was an inconclusive engagement fought off northwestern Sumatra, near Banda Aceh, between French and British naval squadrons operating in the waters of the Dutch East Indies. The French squadron of six frigates had been conducting commerce raiding against British trade routes through territories captured from the Dutch, and represented a serious threat to British commercial and naval interests in a region where British naval strength was already diminished. The British response — two 74-gun ships of the line hastily combined to check the French advance eastward — reflected the strain on Royal Navy resources in the theater. Although the engagement produced no decisive outcome, the French sustained 104 casualties. The action illustrates the broader contest for maritime dominance in Southeast Asian waters during the Revolutionary Wars, where French raiding strategy in Dutch colonial territory put sustained pressure on British trade and forced reactive deployments from an overstretched British naval establishment in the region.
