Battle context
The Battle of Rastatt was an engagement during the War of the First Coalition in which French Republican forces under Jean Moreau pressed against Habsburg defensive positions along the Murg River. The action resulted in the Austrians under Count Latour being driven back to the Alb River, surrendering ground in the Baden region. With French forces numbering approximately 20,500 against an Austrian force of around 6,000, the engagement demonstrated a significant disparity in strength.
