Battle of Ossów

Significance

The Battle of Ossów, fought in the fields near Wołomin on 14 August 1920, was part of the larger Soviet drive on Warsaw during the Polish-Soviet War. Soviet units initially captured the strategically important village of Ossów during the day, but a Polish counter-attack in the evening retook it. The engagement carried weight beyond its local scale: it was among the first skirmishes won by Polish forces since the Soviet offensive had begun in late spring, marking an early check to Bolshevist momentum at the gates of the Polish capital.
