Battle of Nanri Island

Overview

The Battle of Nanri Island was a conflict between the Republic of China Army (ROCA) and the People's Liberation Army (PLA), over Nanri Island in today's Nanri Town, Xiuyu District, Putian, Fujian, People's Republic of China off the coast of Mainland China. This conflict occurred from 11 April 1952, to 15 April 1952, and resulted in a ROCA victory with complete destruction of PLA forces. However ROCA later abandoned this island and retreated, with all its captured prizes and POWs, to Taiwan.

Significance

The Battle of Nanri Island was a localized engagement during the post-mainland phase of the Chinese Civil War, fought between ROCA forces and a substantially smaller PLA garrison. Despite a numerical advantage of roughly 6,000 ROCA troops against approximately 1,300 PLA defenders, the operation resulted in the complete destruction of PLA forces on the island and a tactical ROCA victory. However, the Republic of China forces subsequently abandoned Nanri Island and withdrew to Taiwan, taking captured materiel and prisoners of war with them. The battle thus produced no lasting territorial change; the island remained under PRC control. It illustrates the pattern of ROCA coastal raiding operations in this period, where tactical success did not translate into permanent occupation, reflecting the broader strategic limits facing Taiwan in contesting mainland-held offshore positions after 1949.
