Battle of Hainan Island
Overview
The Battle of Hainan Island occurred in 1950, during the final phase of the Chinese Civil War. The People's Republic of China (PRC) conducted an amphibious assault on Hainan Island on 16 April, assisted by the Hainan communist movement which controlled much of the island's interior, while the Republic of China (ROC) controlled the coast; their forces were concentrated in the north near Haikou and were forced to retreat south after the landings. The communists secured Hainan's southern cities by the end of the month and declared victory on 1 May.

Significance
The Battle of Hainan Island marked the effective end of the Chinese Civil War on the Chinese mainland periphery, completing the People's Republic of China's consolidation of major Chinese territory. The PRC's successful amphibious assault, despite facing a numerically larger ROC garrison, eliminated the last significant Nationalist foothold on a large Chinese island before Taiwan itself. ROC forces, concentrated near Haikou in the north, were unable to hold their coastal positions after the landings and suffered approximately 33,000 casualties against a PRC force that sustained around 4,000. The fall of Hainan removed a potential staging ground for any Nationalist counteroffensive and demonstrated that the PRC could project amphibious power against defended island positions — a capability with direct implications for the remaining cross-strait confrontation with Taiwan.
Tactics
The PRC conducted an amphibious assault on 16 April, coordinating the landings with the Hainan communist movement, which already controlled much of the island's interior. This internal presence divided the ROC's defensive burden between coastal defense and internal security. ROC forces were concentrated in the north near Haikou and, unable to hold against the combined pressure of the landings and the interior communist forces, were forced to retreat southward. The communists then advanced to secure the southern cities, completing their control of the island by the end of the month.
