Battle of Miyako Bay

Overview

The Battle of Miyako Bay was a naval action on 6 May 1869, in which samurai loyalists of the former Tokugawa shogunate under the flag of the newly formed Republic of Ezo failed to take over the Kōtetsu, the flagship of the Imperial forces of the new Meiji government. It was part of the overall Battle of Hakodate at the end of the Boshin War.

Significance

The Battle of Miyako Bay was a naval action in which forces of the Republic of Ezo attempted to seize the Kōtetsu, the Imperial fleet's flagship, from the Meiji government. The operation failed, leaving Imperial naval forces in possession of their most capable warship. The action took place within the broader Battle of Hakodate, the final campaign of the Boshin War, and the failure of the Ezo Republic to capture the Kōtetsu contributed to the erosion of their naval position as the conflict moved toward its conclusion. The Republic of Ezo, formed by Tokugawa loyalist samurai, was unable to offset the Imperial advantage at sea, accelerating the end of organized resistance to Meiji rule.
