Battle of Mileto

Overview

The Battle of Mileto took place during the War of the Fourth Coalition on 28 May 1807 in Calabria. The Bourbon Kingdom of Sicily attempted to re-conquer its possessions in continental Italy, known as the Kingdom of Naples. The battle ended in a victory for French forces under general Jean Reynier.

Significance

The Battle of Mileto was part of the Bourbon Kingdom of Sicily's effort to reclaim its continental Italian possessions, the Kingdom of Naples, which had fallen under French control. The engagement resulted in a French victory under General Jean Reynier, checking the Sicilian offensive into Calabria. Sicilian casualties of 1,633 against an equal force of roughly 5,000 on each side indicate a decisive repulse. The outcome reinforced French dominance over the Kingdom of Naples and demonstrated the difficulty of Bourbon attempts to reverse the strategic situation on the Italian peninsula through military action from Sicily.
