Battle of Kumanovo

Overview

The Battle of Kumanovo, on 23–24 October 1912, was a major battle of the First Balkan War. It was an important Serbian victory over the Ottoman army in the Kosovo Vilayet, shortly after the outbreak of the war. After this defeat, the Ottoman army abandoned the major part of the region, suffering heavy losses in manpower and in war materiel.

Significance

The Battle of Kumanovo on 23–24 October 1912 was one of the first major engagements of the First Balkan War, fought shortly after hostilities opened. The Serbian victory, achieved with a force roughly double the size of the Ottoman contingent, broke Ottoman resistance in the Kosovo Vilayet. Following the defeat, the Ottoman army abandoned the greater part of the region and sustained heavy losses in both manpower and war materiel. The battle thus accelerated the collapse of Ottoman control across a strategically significant zone and opened the interior of the Balkan Peninsula to further Serbian advances during the campaign.
