Battle of Kardzhali

Significance

The Battle of Kardzhali, fought on 21 October 1912 during the First Balkan War, resulted in the Bulgarian Haskovo Detachment defeating the Ottoman Kırcaali Detachment of Yaver Pasha. The engagement secured Kardzhali and the Eastern Rhodopes for Bulgaria, permanently incorporating that territory into the Bulgarian state. The battle's local consequence proved lasting enough that 21 October is observed annually as a holiday of the city of Kardzhali, marking the date of its incorporation into Bulgaria during the broader Bulgarian campaign against Ottoman forces in the opening weeks of the war.
