Battle context

The Battle of Kumanovo on 23–24 October 1912 was one of the first major engagements of the First Balkan War, fought shortly after hostilities opened. The Serbian victory, achieved with a force roughly double the size of the Ottoman contingent, broke Ottoman resistance in the Kosovo Vilayet. Following the defeat, the Ottoman army abandoned the greater part of the region and sustained heavy losses in both manpower and war materiel. The battle thus accelerated the collapse of Ottoman control across a strategically significant zone and opened the interior of the Balkan Peninsula to further Serbian advances during the campaign.
