Significance

The Battle of Jinzhou (Chinchow) was fought as part of the Liaoshen Campaign, a major operational phase of the Chinese Civil War. The People's Liberation Army committed roughly 250,000 troops against a Republic of China Army force of approximately 150,000, suffering 24,000 casualties while inflicting around 20,000 on the Nationalist side. The battle is identified as a turning point in the Liaoshen Campaign, and the campaign as a whole resulted in Communist capture of Northeast China. Control of the northeast gave the People's Liberation Army a strategically vital industrial and agricultural base, fundamentally altering the balance of the broader civil war between the Nationalist government and the Communist Party.
