Battle of Jinan

Overview

The Battle of Jinan was between the forces of Chiang Kai-shek and those of his opponents. Fu Zuoyi abandoned Jinan and the National Revolutionary Army entered the city on August 15.

Significance

The Battle of Jinan saw the communist Eastern China Field Army besiege and capture Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province and a major transportation hub with a population of approximately 600,000. The fall of this significant urban center to communist forces marked a consequential shift in the Chinese Civil War, delivering control of a key provincial capital in northeastern China. The victory directly set the stage for the Huaihai Campaign, one of the decisive engagements of the war. Commanders on the Kuomintang side included Jiang Guangnai, Cai Tingkai, Chen Cheng, and Fu Zuoyi on the opposing side.
