Battle of Jena–Auerstedt

Overview

The twin battles of Jena and Auerstedt were fought on 14 October 1806 on the plateau west of the river Saale in today's Germany, more specifically in today's Thuringia, between the forces of Napoleon I of France and Frederick William III of Prussia, at the outset of the War of the Fourth Coalition during the Napoleonic Wars. The disastrous defeats suffered in these battles by the Prussian Army, which had not been reformed for about half a century, subjugated the Kingdom of Prussia to the French Empire until the Sixth Coalition was formed in 1813.

Significance

The twin engagements at Jena and Auerstedt, fought simultaneously on 14 October 1806 on the plateau west of the river Saale in Thuringia, inflicted catastrophic losses on the Prussian Army and effectively subjugated the Kingdom of Prussia to the French Empire. Prussian casualties of 26,000–27,000 against French losses of 5,000–6,000 reflected the scale of the collapse. The Prussian Army, unreformed for roughly half a century, proved unable to meet the operational demands of Napoleonic warfare. The defeats removed Prussia as an active belligerent in the War of the Fourth Coalition and kept it subordinated to French power until the formation of the Sixth Coalition in 1813, making Jena–Auerstedt one of the most consequential engagements of the Napoleonic Wars in terms of its effect on the European state system.
