Significance
The Battle of Friedland delivered a decisive French victory over the Russian army under Bennigsen, routing much of the Russian force and driving it into a chaotic retreat across the Alle river. With Napoleon commanding approximately 80,000 troops against a Russian force estimated at between 46,000 and 60,000, the engagement inflicted casualties on the Russian side that dwarfed French losses, effectively breaking the operational cohesion of Bennigsen's army. The battle, fought on the territory of what is now Kaliningrad Oblast, carried significant weight within the broader Napoleonic Wars by undermining Russia's capacity to continue the campaign and directly pressuring Tsar Alexander I toward negotiation. It stands as one of the engagements that helped bring about the end of the War of the Fourth Coalition.
