Significance

The Battle of San Domingo was a naval engagement of the War of the Third Coalition, fought between French and British squadrons of ships of the line off the southern coast of the French-occupied Captaincy General of Santo Domingo in the Caribbean. French casualties amounted to 1,510, reflecting the scale of the defeat suffered by Leissègues's squadron at the hands of Duckworth's force. The engagement formed part of the broader naval contest of the Napoleonic Wars, in which Britain sought to neutralize French naval power in both European and colonial waters, limiting France's ability to project force across the Atlantic and maintain its Caribbean holdings.
