Significance

The Battle of Catalán was an engagement between Luso-Brazilian forces under the Marquis of Alegrete and artiguista forces commanded by Andrés Latorre at Arroyo Catalán, in the territory that is now Uruguay. Fought in January 1817, it occurred during the Portuguese campaign to assert control over the Banda Oriental against the Federal League aligned with José Artigas. The Federal League suffered 1,190 casualties against a Luso-Brazilian force of roughly 2,500, suggesting a significant attrition blow to the artiguista military capacity at a relatively early stage of the conflict. With the Portuguese fielding a smaller force yet inflicting heavy losses on the 3,400-strong Federal League contingent, the battle contributed to the broader erosion of artiguista resistance that would eventually result in Portuguese consolidation of the Banda Oriental by the end of the conflict in 1820.
