Battle of Arapey

Overview

The Battle of Arapey was an encounter between the Luso-Brazilian forces under José de Abreu Mena Barreto and the Artiguist forces led by José Artigas, the independentist caudillo himself, in Salto, modern-day Uruguay. On 3 January 1817 Abreu attacked Artigas army in its camp, surprising the defenders. The Luso-Brazilian forces secured a victory and seized all of the supplies of the independentist army.

Significance

The Battle of Arapey marked a significant reversal for the Federal League during the Portuguese Conquest of the Banda Oriental. Luso-Brazilian forces under José de Abreu Mena Barreto struck Artigas's camp at Salto in a surprise attack, defeating the independentist army and seizing all of its supplies. The loss of materiel dealt a direct blow to Artigas's operational capacity at an early stage of the Portuguese campaign, stripping his force of the logistical base needed to sustain continued resistance. That the engagement brought Luso-Brazilian troops into direct confrontation with Artigas himself underscored the strategic pressure the invasion was placing on the Federal League's leadership.
