Irish Confederate Wars

The Siege of Drogheda, conducted from 3 to 11 September 1649, marked the opening action of the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland during the Irish Confederate Wars. Cromwell's Commonwealth force of approximately 12,000 troops besieged the port town, which was defended by a mixed garrison of Irish Catholics and Royalists numbering around 2,547 men under Sir Arthur Aston. Royalist casualties reached approximately 2,000, reflecting the near-total destruction of the defending force. As the first major engagement of the Cromwellian campaign, the fall of Drogheda established the trajectory of English Commonwealth military operations across Ireland and signaled the scale of force that would characterize the conquest. The town's strategic value as a port and its mixed confessional and political garrison made its reduction an early statement of Commonwealth intent in subduing both Royalist resistance and Irish Catholic opposition simultaneously.
