First English Civil War

The Battle of Edgehill, fought near Edge Hill and Kineton in southern Warwickshire on 23 October 1642, was the opening pitched battle of the First English Civil War. The engagement brought together forces under Charles I, with cavalry commanded by Prince Rupert and infantry leadership distributed among the Earl of Forth, Lord Astley, Lord Lindsey, and others, against the Parliamentarian army under the Earl of Essex. With approximately 11,000 Royalists facing around 12,000 Parliamentarians, and casualties of roughly 1,500 on each side, the battle was costly without producing a clear decision. As the first major engagement of the war, Edgehill set the conflict on a footing of open field warfare between two substantial rival armies, establishing that neither side could quickly overwhelm the other. The absence of a definitive result meant the war would continue as a prolonged contest rather than being settled in its opening confrontation.
