Skirmish of Oversø

Significance

The Skirmish of Oversø, fought near Flensburg in April 1848, formed part of the opening military contest over Schleswig-Holstein that defined the early phase of the First Schleswig War. German forces, including contingents from the Kingdom of Hanover and the Duchy of Mecklenburg, achieved a victory over Danish forces in this engagement. The action took place during the period when the war's front lines were still being established, and a Hanoverian force of 10,000 was committed to the German federal effort to support the duchies' bid against Danish authority. The outcome at Oversø contributed to German momentum in the Flensburg region during the conflict's opening weeks.
