Battle of Fredericia

The Battle of Fredericia was fought between soldiers of Schleswig-Holstein and Denmark on 6 July 1849 at Fredericia in Denmark. The battle was part of the First Schleswig War, which was a conflict between Schleswig-Holstein, supported by several German states, and Denmark. The Danes won the battle.

Significance

The Battle of Fredericia on 6 July 1849 was a Danish victory in the First Schleswig War, a conflict in which Schleswig-Holstein, backed by several German states, contested Danish control of the duchies. Denmark fielded a force of 24,000 against a Schleswig-Holstein army of 16,000 under Eduard von Bonin, inflicting 1,134 casualties on the opposing force while sustaining 1,344 of their own. The Danish success at Fredericia demonstrated that the Schleswig-Holstein forces, despite external German support, could be defeated in open engagement, reinforcing Denmark's capacity to sustain its military position in the war.
