Skirmish of Århus

Overview

Skirmish of Århus or Rytterfægtningen on 31 May 1849 was a skirmish during the First Schleswig War between Denmark and Prussia under the German Confederation, a few kilometers north of the city of Aarhus, Denmark. The skirmish was a Danish victory that stopped the Prussian advance through the peninsula of Jutland at the city of Aarhus.

Significance

The Skirmish of Århus, fought a few kilometers north of Aarhus on 31 May 1849, produced a Danish victory that halted the Prussian advance through the Jutland peninsula. By stopping the German Confederation forces under Constantine Alexander of Salm-Salm at Aarhus, the Danish commanders Olaf Rye and Gotthold Møller prevented a deeper Prussian penetration into the Danish mainland at a critical stage of the First Schleswig War.
