Skirmish at Tegalreja

Overview

A skirmish at Tegalreja, the estate of Yogyakartan Prince Diponegoro, took place on 20 July 1825. The incident took place following a Dutch–Yogyakartan attempt to capture Diponegoro in order to prevent a brewing rebellion, which had in turn been incited by a government road project. The Dutch–Yogyakartan force failed to capture Diponegoro, who would escape to Selarong and trigger the Java War for the next five years.

Significance

The skirmish at Tegalreja was the opening event of the Java War. A Dutch–Yogyakartan force moved against Prince Diponegoro's estate in an attempt to arrest him and suppress a rebellion before it could take hold, the underlying tension having been aggravated by a government road project. The force failed to capture Diponegoro, who escaped to Selarong. That escape allowed Diponegoro to launch the Java War, which would continue for five years and become one of the most significant anti-colonial conflicts in the history of the Dutch East Indies.
