Attack on Selarong

Overview

The Attack on Selarong was a series of Dutch military expeditions in 1825 to storm Javanese Prince Diponegoro's primary base at Selarong Cave, at the start of the Java War. The expedition was divided into three phases. All of the expeditions resulted in Dutch failure and were ineffective in relieving pressure on Dutch forces during the siege of Yogyakarta.

Significance

The Attack on Selarong comprised three Dutch military expeditions in 1825 aimed at dislodging Prince Diponegoro from his primary base at Selarong Cave at the outset of the Java War. All three phases failed. The Dutch inability to seize or neutralize Selarong left Diponegoro's command position intact at a critical early moment in the conflict, and the repeated failures did nothing to relieve Dutch forces then under pressure during the siege of Yogyakarta. The outcome demonstrated the limits of Dutch offensive capability against a fortified inland base at the war's opening, and allowed the Javanese rebellion to consolidate rather than be disrupted before it could take hold.
