The Battle of Fort Vredeburg was a conflict at Fort Vredeburg, Yogyakarta, between Prince Diponegoro and the Dutch East Indies. Diponegoro's forces captured the fort and killed 200 Dutch soldiers.

Significance

The Battle of Fort Vredeburg was an early engagement of the Java War, in which Diponegoro's forces seized Fort Vredeburg in Yogyakarta and killed 200 Dutch soldiers. The capture of a Dutch fortification at the outset of the conflict demonstrated that Diponegoro commanded sufficient strength to challenge colonial military positions directly, establishing the insurgency as a serious threat to Dutch control over the region rather than a sporadic uprising.
