Siege of the Castle of Saint George

Significance

The capture of the Castle of Saint George on Cephalonia in late 1500 represented a significant reversal for the Ottoman position in the Ionian Islands during the Second Ottoman–Venetian War. The siege, which ran from 8 November to 24 December 1500, was conducted by a combined Spanish-Venetian force under Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba and Benedetto Pesaro.
