Battle of Modon

Overview

The Battle of Modon, aka the Second Battle of Lepanto, took place in August 1500 during the war of 1499–1503 between the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Venice. The Ottomans, who had won the Battle of Zonchio the previous year, were again victorious under Admiral Kemal Reis.

Significance

The Battle of Modon, fought on 3 August 1500 during the Second Ottoman–Venetian War, pitted an Ottoman force reported at between 30,000 and 60,000 men under Kemal Reis and Feriz Beg against a Venetian garrison of roughly 7,000. Ottoman casualties in the range of 5,000 to 6,000 indicate the engagement was heavily contested despite the disparity in numbers. No outcome is recorded in the available sources, but the battle's place in the 1499–1503 war — a conflict in which the Ottomans systematically reduced Venetian footholds in the eastern Mediterranean — situates it within a broader campaign of pressure on Venetian maritime positions in the Peloponnese.
