Battle of Zonchio

Significance

The Battle of Zonchio, fought across four separate days in August 1499, was a major naval engagement of the Second Ottoman–Venetian War of 1499–1503. The battle's occurrence over four distinct days — 12, 20, 22, and 25 August — indicates a prolonged and interrupted contest rather than a single decisive action, reflecting the operational character of naval warfare in the eastern Mediterranean at the close of the fifteenth century. Commanded on the Ottoman side by Kemal Reis and Feriz Beg, and on the Venetian side by Antonio Grimani and Andrea Loredan, the engagement placed the two leading maritime powers of the region in direct confrontation at sea during the opening phase of the war.
