Significance

The Siege of Scutari lasted from 28 October 1912 to 23 April 1913, making it one of the most protracted engagements of the First Balkan War. Montenegro committed a force of 40,000–50,000 troops against an Ottoman garrison of 20,000–25,000 defenders, sustaining 9,438 casualties before ultimately capturing Shkodër. The city's fall represented a significant Ottoman territorial loss in the western Balkans and marked the effective end of sustained Ottoman resistance in that sector of the war. The siege drew in multiple commanders on both sides and extended well beyond the period when Ottoman forces elsewhere had largely been defeated, underscoring the difficulty of reducing fortified urban positions even against numerically superior besieging forces.
