BATTLE // July 6, 1522

Siege of Rhodes

LOADING MAP TELEMETRY…

Overview

The siege of Rhodes of 1522 was the second and ultimately successful attempt by the Ottoman Empire to expel the Knights of Rhodes from their island stronghold and thereby secure Ottoman control of the Eastern Mediterranean. The first siege in 1480 had been unsuccessful. Despite very strong defenses, the walls were demolished over the course of six months by Turkish artillery and mines.

Significance

The Siege of Rhodes, conducted by Ottoman forces under Suleiman the Magnificent against the Knights Hospitaller under Philippe Villiers de L'Isle-Adam, resulted in the removal of the Hospitallers from Rhodes, eliminating a persistent Christian military presence in the eastern Mediterranean that had long threatened Ottoman naval communications and supply routes. The scale of the engagement is indicated by the disparity in forces — Ottoman strength estimated between 100,000 and 180,000 against a Hospitaller garrison of roughly 6,700 — and by casualties that suggest protracted and costly fighting, with Ottoman losses recorded at around 60,000 against Hospitaller losses of over 5,000. The loss of Rhodes represented a significant contraction of the Hospitallers' operational capacity within the Ottoman Wars in Europe, forcing the order's eventual relocation and ending their use of the island as a base for operations against Ottoman shipping.
