The Battle of Krbava Field was fought between the Ottoman Empire of Bayezid II and an army of the Kingdom of Croatia, at the time in personal union with the Kingdom of Hungary, on 9 September 1493, in the Krbava field, a part of the Lika region in Croatia.

Significance

The Battle of Krbava Field, fought on 9 September 1493, pitted an Ottoman force drawn from the sanjaks of Bosnia, Alaca Hisar, and Üsküp against a Croatian army operating under the Kingdom of Croatia, which was then in personal union with the Kingdom of Hungary. The disparity in both size and outcome was severe: the Croatian force of 2,000–3,000 men suffered between 5,000 and 7,000 casualties against an Ottoman force of 8,000–10,000, while Ottoman losses were recorded at roughly 1,000. The battle took place in the Krbava field of the Lika region and stands as one of the most destructive defeats suffered by Croatian arms during the long Ottoman advance into Europe. The engagement removed a substantial portion of the Croatian military establishment and underscored the inability of the Croatian-Hungarian union to field a force capable of checking Ottoman expansion in the western Balkans at this stage of the Ottoman Wars in Europe.
