Siege of Baler

Significance

The Siege of Baler lasted 337 days, from 1 July 1898 to 2 June 1899, making it one of the longest single engagements of the Philippine Revolution. Its central historical anomaly is that the Spanish garrison under Juan Alonso Zayas and Saturnino Cerezo continued fighting well after the war that had prompted the siege had effectively ended. The Treaty of Paris on 10 December 1898 transferred Spanish sovereignty over the Philippines to the United States, yet the defenders at Baler, cut off from communications with their own government and military, had no knowledge of this outcome and maintained their position against Filipino forces for another six months. The siege thus extended beyond the formal close of Spanish colonial authority in the archipelago, making it an episode that straddles the Philippine Revolution, the Spanish-American War, and the opening period of American administration.
