Overview

The siege of Aspis or Clupea was fought in 256 BC between Carthage and the Roman Republic. It was the first fighting on African land during the First Punic War.

Significance

The siege of Aspis marked the first military engagement on African soil during the First Punic War, representing a significant escalation in the conflict's geographic scope. Prior to this operation, fighting had been confined to Sicily and the surrounding waters; the Roman landing in North Africa opened a new theater and brought the war directly to Carthaginian territory. The siege was conducted under the command of Marcus Atilius Regulus and established a Roman foothold on the African coast that would underpin subsequent operations in the campaign.
