Battle of Sulci

Significance

The Battle of Sulci was a Roman naval victory fought off the Sardinian coast near the town of Sulci during the First Punic War, secured under the command of consul Gaius Sulpicius Paterculus. The Carthaginian fleet was largely sunk, with the remaining vessels abandoned on land, representing a significant material blow to Carthaginian naval strength in the western Mediterranean. The defeat carried immediate consequences within the Carthaginian command structure: the Carthaginian commander Hannibal Gisco was killed — either crucified or stoned to death — by his own mutinying forces in the aftermath, reflecting the severity with which the Carthaginian military held its commanders accountable for defeat.
