Battle of Tyndaris

Significance

The Battle of Tyndaris was a naval engagement of the First Punic War fought off the Sicilian coast between Roman forces under Gaius Atilius Regulus and a Carthaginian fleet commanded by Hamilcar. The battle took place in the waters between Tyndaris and the Aeolian Islands. Tyndaris itself was a Greek colonial town situated on high ground overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea in the Gulf of Patti, which Hiero II of Syracuse had allowed to serve as a Carthaginian base, giving it operational value beyond its size. Following the engagement, the town passed to Roman control, removing a Carthaginian foothold on the northern Sicilian coast and extending Roman reach in a theater where naval dominance was central to the broader contest for the island.
