Siege of Aleppo

Overview

The siege of Aleppo, the Byzantine stronghold and one of few remaining Byzantine castles in the northern Levant after the decisive Battle of Yarmouk, was laid between August and October 637.

Significance

The Siege of Aleppo on 1 August 637 was part of the Rashidun Caliphate's broader Muslim conquest of the Levant, a campaign that systematically extended Arab Muslim authority over former Byzantine-controlled Syria. The operation was conducted under the joint command of Khalid ibn al-Walid and Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah, two of the principal commanders of the Levantine campaign, with a recorded Rashidun force of 17,000. Aleppo's position in northern Syria made its reduction a significant step in consolidating caliphate control over the region as a whole.
