Battle of Ajnadayn

Significance

The Battle of Ajnadayn, fought in July or August 634 near Bayt Jibrin, was the first major pitched battle between the Byzantine Empire and the Rashidun Caliphate in the Muslim conquest of the Levant. The engagement resulted in a decisive Muslim victory, with Byzantine forces of approximately 40,000 suffering reported casualties of 50,000 against a Rashidun force of around 20,000 that sustained roughly 5,000 losses. The scale of the Byzantine defeat and the disparity in casualties underscored the early military effectiveness of the Rashidun armies under commanders including Khalid ibn al-Walid, Amr ibn al-As, and Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah. As the first large-scale confrontation of the campaign, Ajnadayn established the pattern of Rashidun offensive momentum that would characterize the broader conquest of the Levant through the remainder of the 630s. Most accounts of the battle derive from Muslim sources, notably the ninth-century historian al-Waqidi, meaning the record reflects one belligerent's perspective on an engagement that nonetheless proved foundational to the Arab expansion into Byzantine-held territory.
