Second Battle of Timbuktu

Significance

Two Islamist attacks against Malian army positions in Timbuktu were repelled with French support, preventing the seizure of significant sites within the city. The engagement demonstrated the continued threat posed by Islamist forces even after French-led intervention had driven them from major urban centers earlier in the Mali War, and underscored the ongoing dependence of Malian forces on French military assistance to hold recaptured territory.
