Battle of Ber

On April 21, 2013, clashes broke out in Ber, Mali, after fighters from the Arab Movement of Azawad seized the town from the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA).

Significance

The clash at Ber in April 2013 reflected the fragmented and contested nature of armed factions operating in northern Mali following the French-led Serval intervention earlier that year. With Malian government forces and international troops focused on dislodging Islamist groups from major population centers, smaller armed movements competed for control of towns across the Azawad region. The Arab Movement of Azawad's seizure of Ber from the MNLA illustrated that inter-factional rivalry among non-Islamist armed groups remained a live variable in the conflict, complicating any straightforward narrative of a stabilized north. Control of individual towns carried local administrative and strategic weight, and shifts between the MAA and MNLA shaped the balance of influence that would factor into subsequent peace negotiations.
