Battle of Diabaly

The Battle of Diabaly was fought between government forces of Mali, against groups of Islamists militants such as the AQIM and Ansar Dine. The Islamists held control of Diabaly for no longer than a week until Malian forces with the help French air strikes recaptured the town.

Significance

The Battle of Diabaly was part of the opening phase of French military intervention in the Mali War. Islamist militants from AQIM and Ansar Dine seized the town of Diabaly, but Malian government forces, supported by French air strikes, recaptured it within a week. The swift reversal demonstrated the decisive role French air power played in halting the militant advance and restoring Malian territorial control. Ansar Dine suffered an estimated 100–150 casualties in the engagement, a significant attrition for a force operating in a dispersed insurgent campaign. The battle illustrated the pattern that would define the broader French intervention: Malian ground forces proving unable to hold or retake territory without external air support.
