Overview

The Second Battle of Huachi was a confrontation that occurred on 12 September 1821 between pro-independence troops led by General Antonio José de Sucre and Royalist troops led by General Melchor Aymerich, president of the Real Audiencia of Quito. Sucre, after having won the Battle of Yaguachi on 19 August, advanced towards Quito. The Spanish, who followed closely, positioned themselves to do battle in a field called Huachi, where they had already defeated Guayaquil forces a year before.

Significance

The Second Battle of Huachi occurred less than a month after Sucre's victory at Yaguachi, where independence forces had gained momentum advancing toward Quito. The Royalists under Aymerich, president of the Real Audiencia of Quito, chose to engage at Huachi — ground where Spanish forces had already defeated Guayaquil troops in a prior engagement — checking Sucre's northward advance. Independence forces suffered between 300 and 500 casualties, a significant loss for the Province Libre de Guayaquil's military strength. The engagement demonstrated that Royalist forces under Aymerich retained the capacity to contest the interior even after reverses, prolonging the campaign for Quito and complicating the broader liberation effort in the region.

Tactics

The Royalists positioned themselves in a field called Huachi to receive the advancing independence forces. Beyond this choice of ground — terrain where Spanish forces had previously prevailed — the overview does not describe the dispositions, maneuvers, or conduct of the engagement in further detail.
