The Battle of Pichincha took place on 24 May 1822, on the slopes of the Pichincha volcano, 3,500 meters above sea-level, right next to the city of Quito, in modern Ecuador.

Significance

The Battle of Pichincha, fought on the slopes of the volcano of the same name adjacent to Quito, was the decisive engagement of the Ecuadorian War of Independence. Spanish forces under Melchior Aymerich suffered approximately 1,260 casualties against a Gran Colombian force commanded by Antonio de Sucre, Andrés de Santa Cruz, and José María Córdova. The engagement secured Quito and effectively ended Spanish authority over the territory of modern Ecuador, incorporating it into Gran Colombia.
