Second Battle of Brega

Overview

The Second Battle of Brega took place during the Libyan Civil War. Eleven days earlier, anti-Gaddafi forces had beaten back an attempt by loyalist forces to take the town on 2 March 2011, in the First Battle of Brega. Following that battle, rebel forces advanced along the Libyan Coastal Highway, taking the towns of Ra's Lanuf and Bin Jawad. However, after the Battle of Bin Jawad and the Battle of Ra's Lanuf, government troops retook all of the lost territory and were once again threatening Brega by mid-March.

Significance

The Second Battle of Brega unfolded as part of a rapid reversal of rebel fortunes along the Libyan Coastal Highway in the early weeks of the civil war. Opposition forces under Abdul Fatah Younis had pressed westward after repelling the first loyalist assault on Brega in early March, seizing Ra's Lanuf and Bin Jawad in quick succession. Government forces under Gaddafi then counterattacked, retaking both towns and threatening Brega again by mid-March. The engagement reflected the fragility of the opposition's early territorial gains: a 2,000-strong rebel force suffered approximately 800 casualties from the Conseil national de transition, underscoring the asymmetry between loyalist firepower and the nascent rebel military. Control of Brega carried strategic weight because of its position on the coastal highway and its proximity to oil infrastructure, making the town a recurring flashpoint in the contest for eastern Libya.
