Significance

The Battle of Bin Jawad was fought in early March 2011 as opposition and government forces contested control of the coastal town during the rapidly shifting front-line engagements of the Libyan Civil War. The opposition force of approximately 1,000 fighters faced a larger government contingent of around 1,500 troops loyal to Muammar Gaddafi. Opposition casualties recorded by the Conseil national de transition ranged between 120 and 200, indicating significant attrition for the rebel side. The engagement was part of the broader contest along the Libyan coast in which both sides traded towns as the front oscillated between the opposition's eastern stronghold and Gaddafi-held western territory.
