Pikysyry maneuver

Overview

The Pikysyry maneuver was a tactic used by Brazilian marshal Luís Alves de Lima e Silva, Duke of Caxias, during the Pikysyry campaign to outflank the Paraguayan southern defense line along the stream of Pikysyry consisting of 142 gun platforms along a line 9.1 km long, built by the British engineer Lt. Col. George Thompson. Just to the north were the batteries of Angostura, protecting the River Paraguay. Marshal Caxias decided to attack from the Paraguayan rear by constructing a 10.7 km road on the Chaco side of the river starting at Santa Theresa.

Significance

The Pikysyry maneuver was the operational stroke that broke the Paraguayan southern defense line during the Caxias campaign of 1868. Paraguay had constructed a formidable prepared position along the Pikysyry stream — 142 gun platforms extending across a 9.1 km front, engineered by British officer George Thompson — anchored to the north by the batteries at Angostura on the River Paraguay. Facing this fortified line with an 8,000-strong force against 2,000 Paraguayan defenders, Brazilian Marshal Caxias chose envelopment over frontal assault, bypassing what would have been a costly direct engagement against a purpose-built defensive system. The success of the maneuver rendered the Pikysyry line untenable and effectively unhinged Paraguayan defensive strategy in the south, accelerating the collapse of organized Paraguayan resistance in the final phase of the war.
