Overview

The Battle of Lomas Valentinas was fought in the Central Department of Paraguay on December 21–27, 1868. The Paraguayan Army, led personally by president Francisco Solano López, was decisively defeated, though López managed to escape. On 30 December 1868, the Paraguayan garrison at Angostura, with 1,907 men, surrendered to the Allies.

Significance

The Battle of Lomas Valentinas, fought in the Central Department of Paraguay in late December 1868, resulted in a decisive defeat for the Paraguayan Army under President Francisco Solano López. The engagement effectively destroyed the organized Paraguayan force defending the capital region: Paraguay committed approximately 3,000 men against an Allied Brazilian force of over 19,000, suffering casualties that amounted to its entire engaged strength. López escaped, but his field army did not survive intact. Within days of the battle's conclusion, the Paraguayan garrison at Angostura — some 1,907 men — surrendered to Allied forces on December 30, compounding the collapse. Together, Lomas Valentinas and the Angostura capitulation stripped Paraguay of its remaining coherent defensive capacity in the central theater, opening the way for the fall of Asunción and reducing the war's continuation to a protracted pursuit of López and remnant forces through the interior.
