Operation Tungsten

Overview

Operation Tungsten was a Second World War air raid by the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy against the German battleship Tirpitz. The operation sought to damage or destroy Tirpitz at her base in Kaafjord in the far north of Norway before she could become fully operational again following a period of repairs.

Significance

Operation Tungsten was a Fleet Air Arm strike designed to neutralize the German battleship Tirpitz before she could return to operational status following a repair period. Tirpitz represented a persistent threat to Allied convoy routes and tied down substantial British naval assets as long as she remained combat-capable. By targeting the ship at her Kaafjord anchorage in northern Norway, the Royal Navy sought to remove or reduce that threat without committing surface forces to a direct engagement. German casualties from the raid are recorded in the range of 122 to 316, indicating the strike inflicted meaningful personnel losses on the ship's crew and defenses.
